About Mary E. Lyons
Mary E. Lyons is a former reading specialist and school librarian with twenty-three years of experience at all grade levels. She began sharing the lost stories of women and African Americans with young people in 1980. Now a full-time writer, her books are a way to continue what she began as a teacher. Her latest interests are Irish-American history and ancient history.
Lyons won the National Endowment for the Humanities Teacher-Scholar Award in 1991. In January 1998, she was Writer-in-Residence at Sweet Briar College, Sweet Briar, Virginia. She was a Fellow-in-Residence at the Virginia Center for the Humanities and Public Policy in 1991 and 1993 and 1999.
Lyons lives with her husband in Charlottesville, Virginia. When she is not researching or writing books, she plays banjo and penny whistle for the Chicken Heads, a traditional music group. Their motto is "We Play for Chicken Feed."
